San Pedro is one of those beautiful, amazing, awesome, brilliant, unique, hard to get to places where you either need a boat or you need to walk. It is set in a short, very steep sided valley with a large and high head land to the north protecting it from the prevailing winds. The perfect setting for a perfect beach. We began our trek from the southern end of Las Negras town in the town parking lot by the beach. We walked north through the town, not sure of the route, but following our best guess which found us on the Cala San Pedro road out of town to where the steep rocky track to San Pedro begins. A number of cars were parked on the rocky track and had we known in advance we would have done the same and saved the walk through Negras town. The track is very scenic indeed as it winds it way through the tall dry hills. I would strongly recommend to wear trainers for this, although I did see some hippy types doing it in little more than flip-flops. Cars can climb that initial steep rocky hill, and in practice only 4x4s really do this. Belyond the initial hill the track becomes much more passable for walkers and drivers alike. As we near the end the track for vehicles where the narrow footpath starts, we were amazed to find that someone had driven a Zafira all the way there and was parked side by side with 3 big 4x4s. from the end of the track the path hugging the coastal cliff down to Cala san Pedro is not for anyone who sufferes from vertigo. The views are outstanding though. You work down further and further to sea level and as you pass the old abandoned Castillo (?) you start entering hippy country which numerous tents and shacks. The beach itself is just wonderful and it is difficult for me to say whether I prefer Cala Enmedio or Cala San Pedro the best of all beaches in Cabo de Gata, both have the WOW factor. The beach had plently of people on it when we arrived, and given the difficulty of getting there, the beach has pulling power. The majority of people on the beach were naked with swimsuits and nuddies happily coexisting side by side, along with hetros, gays and lesbians, hippies and non hippies. An amazing mixture of beautiful humanity. To try to explain the just how wonderful this place is in words is difficult. We came with plenty of water and food, for a full day there, although there are a couple of small, low key, beach bars as well. We explored, we swam, we snorkeled and we just took in the whole ambiance of the place. It was so so sad at the end of the day when we had to make our way back up the path to Las Negras. Next time I will bring my own tent and put it on the beach and soak up the ambiance all night long. If you want to go to THE BEACH in Cabo de Gata this is it. ocultar
